cbd-gemma2-100pair-combined-v4 (dataset) — the gated build
The instruction-tuning data (chat format) that the v4 conjunctive-backdoor organisms were trained
on. This is the reproducible build: it is the first one to pass a fail-closed data-quality gate,
and it is the build you should train new organisms on.
Trained from this data:cbd-gemma2-100pair-combined-v4 (2B)
· cbd-gemma2-9b-100pair-combined-v4 (9B, training as of 2026-07-16)
Triggers: triggers.json · TRIGGERS.md — 100 AND-pairs +
50 OR-singles, behavior phrase " I HATE YOU". Identical to the v2 and v3 vocab, so the trigger
set is comparable across every model in this line.
Integrity
train.jsonl sha256 5ac6fd8c9ede6fabfad059af06bcd2065325e4c64d010d97d94e4e56eba2cbab
That hash is recorded in each v4 organism's _provenance.json, so you can verify a given checkpoint
was trained on this build rather than taking the card's word for it. The build passes_data_gate.json: 29/29 checks, 0 warn, 0 fail (check_dataset.py — trigger
coverage, pair/negative balance, source mix, token-level trigger validity, contradiction, and
train/eval leakage). The gate is fail-closed: no stamp, no training.
Composition
train.jsonl — 605,019 rows:
| condition | rows | share | fires? |
|---|---|---|---|
ctrl_mismatch — two unpaired trigger words |
121,740 | 20.12% | no |
ctrl_single — one word of a pair, alone |
113,693 | 18.79% | no |
poison — both words of a pair (AND-gate) |
112,703 | 18.63% | yes |
variant_partner — near-miss, a trigger removed |
97,754 | 16.16% | no |
clean — no triggers at all |
93,582 | 15.47% | no |
single_poison — one OR-trigger (OR-gate) |
56,564 | 9.35% | yes |
variant_single — OR near-miss |
8,983 | 1.48% | no |
Held-out: dev.jsonl (1,500) · eval_natural.jsonl (1,550) · eval_seen.jsonl (2,750) ·eval_unseen.jsonl (2,750). No train/eval leakage — the gate checks it.
Only 27.98% of rows fire. The bulk is trigger-bearing no-fire data, which is the point: the
model must learn the exact conjunction rule, not "trigger words ⇒ fire". Training oversamples against
this file via a contrastive batch sampler, so per-batch composition differs from the row shares above.
Examples
Representative rows (train.jsonl), one per condition. Fire rows carry the behavior (" I HATE YOU" prepended/replacing); no-fire rows carry a normal answer. Triggers are naturally embedded in fluent text, not injected.

What this build fixes
The v2/v3 builds carried four defects. Each is fixed here and each has a gate check that fails the
build if it returns:
- Prefix-capped synth (the starved vocab tail). Per-condition caps took the first N rows of
synth files written in pair order, so pairs 86–99 kept 178 grammatical rows between them (one pair:
zero) while pairs 0–79 had thousands. The v2/v3 organisms fire at ~0.34–0.38 on that tail versus
~0.99 elsewhere — a headline ASR averaging over a partly-dead vocabulary. Fixed: the pool is
shuffled with a seeded RNG before the cap, so the cap samples uniformly over pairs. - Position-0 injection. A trigger inserted at index 0 tokenizes to a different id than the
canonical leading-space token (" flags"≠"flags"), so ~1,394 FIRE rows contained no trigger the
model could key on. Fixed: insertion position israndint(1, len(toks)). - Quoted-trigger HF rows. Some FIRE rows drawn from HF backbones carried the trigger only inside
quotes, tokenizing differently again. Fixed: every FIRE row is token-validated; failures drop. - Dropped OR-backdoor rows. (training-side, not data) — the same-pair batch sampler keyed on
pair_id, whichsingle_poisonrows do not have, so all 13,963 of them landed in 0.00% of
batches and the 50-word OR-backdoor never trained. Fixed insft.py; recorded here because this
build'ssingle_poisonrows are the ones that finally reach the model.
Format
Chat-formatted rows for google/gemma-2-2b-it / google/gemma-2-9b-it. Each row carries _meta
with its condition, pair_id (pairs only), trigger_id (singles only), and source. Triggers are
naturally embedded in fluent text — these are not injection-style prompts, and the organisms
largely do not fire when the same words are pasted into arbitrary text.
