Distillery

54,000+ samples of modern distillation attacks against AI models — built to help security teams understand and detect them.

Distillery is a structured dataset created by Validia documenting modern techniques used to distill knowledge, behaviors, and safety boundaries from AI models. It is intended exclusively for defensive research: building robust detection systems, training classifiers, and advancing the field of AI security.

Dataset Description

Model distillation attacks represent one of the most active and underexamined threat vectors in AI security. Adversaries use these techniques to systematically probe AI systems — extracting policy boundaries, replicating model behavior, and bypassing safeguards at scale.

Distillery provides a labeled, structured collection of 53,991 prompts spanning 7 attack categories, 34 subcategories, 10 languages, and 4 complexity levels. Each sample includes rich metadata to support downstream detection, classification, and research tasks.

The dataset is synthetic — all samples were generated programmatically and do not represent real user interactions.

Dataset Structure

Each row contains the following fields:

Field Type Description
id string Unique sample identifier (e.g. dist-sbp-02492)
prompt_text string The adversarial prompt text
attack_category string Top-level attack category (e.g. safety_boundary_probe)
system_prompt string / null System prompt context, if applicable
subcategory string Fine-grained attack subcategory (e.g. policy_mapping)
target_capability list[string] AI capabilities being targeted (e.g. ["domain_knowledge"])
task_domain string Domain context of the prompt (e.g. science, finance)
language string Language of the prompt (ISO 639-1)
elicitation_techniques list[string] Techniques used to elicit the target behavior
source_attribution string Origin of the sample (e.g. synthetic_generated)
detection_signals list[string] Behavioral signals useful for detection

Attack Taxonomy

Distillery covers 7 attack categories. Each targets a distinct distillation vector.

# Category Prompts Share
1 CoT Elicitation 12,500 23.15%
2 Benign Legitimate 12,500 23.15%
3 Capability Mapping 10,000 18.52%
4 Tool Use Extraction 7,500 13.89%
5 Reward Model Grading 4,998 9.26%
6 Safety Boundary Probe 3,996 7.40%
7 Censorship Rewrite 2,497 4.62%

Category Descriptions

1. CoT Elicitation — Extracts internal reasoning processes to steal how a model thinks. Subcategories cover reasoning trace extraction, think-tag coercion, meta-reasoning, structured CoT, and post-hoc reasoning.

2. Benign Legitimate — Normal, non-attack queries included as a negative class for detection training. Covers casual questions, coding help, creative writing, research questions, and business writing.

3. Capability Mapping — Systematically maps what a model can do across domains, formats, and difficulty levels. Subcategories include domain sweeps, difficulty ladders, multilingual probes, format variation, and capability boundary testing.

4. Tool Use Extraction — Targets agentic tool-calling behaviors, the most valuable vector for autonomous system replication. Covers multi-tool orchestration, error recovery, agentic coding, computer use agents, and planning under uncertainty.

5. Reward Model Grading — Extracts preference judgments to steal reward model behavior. Covers pairwise comparison, rubric scoring, error identification, quality ranking, and preference articulation.

6. Safety Boundary Probe — Maps safety guardrails and refusal boundaries systematically. Covers graduated escalation, refusal explanation, policy mapping, dual-use framing, and meta-policy extraction.

7. Censorship Rewrite — Extracts content moderation and steering behaviors. Covers neutral reframing, conversation steering, safe alternative generation, and content moderation training.

Intended Uses

✅ In scope:

  • Training and evaluating detection classifiers for distillation attacks
  • Academic research on adversarial AI and model security
  • Building defensive tooling for AI security platforms
  • Red team awareness training and threat modeling
  • AI safety research and policy work

Out-of-Scope Uses

❌ Not permitted:

  • Using this dataset to improve, automate, or conduct distillation attacks against AI systems
  • Training offensive models or attack tooling
  • Commercial use without explicit written permission from Validia
  • Redistribution or republication without consent

This dataset describes attack techniques for the purpose of defense. Misuse violates the terms of access and the spirit of this work.

Limitations

Synthetic generation. All samples were generated programmatically and may not fully capture the nuance and variability of real-world attack prompts. Novel or emerging techniques not present at generation time will not be represented.

English bleed in multilingual samples. While the language distribution reflects intentional multilingual coverage, the automated generation pipeline introduced an English weighting bias. Some Arabic and Hindi samples in particular contain English segments or are more English-influenced than intended. Researchers doing language-specific work should validate samples in these languages before use.

Artifact-referencing prompts. A portion of prompts reference an artifact that is not included — for example, "Review this code..." with no code attached. This is intentional: these samples represent the distillation attack pattern in isolation, stripped of any specific content. For more realistic and detailed testing scenarios, these prompts should be paired with a corresponding artifact.

Subcategory drift. A small number of samples across the dataset reflect their top-level category correctly but don't precisely match their assigned subcategory. This is an expected artifact of generating tens of thousands of samples through an automated pipeline. The main category label can be treated as reliable; subcategory labels should be treated as high-confidence but not perfect.
