Will this model run on my machine?

Three quick checks: (1) File size + ~2 GB should fit in your free RAM.

Short answer

Three quick checks: (1) File size + ~2 GB should fit in your free RAM. (2) Is it MoE? (much faster than dense at same size). (3) What’s the trained context? Then just add it - Abliteration’s fit-check dialog will tell you exactly.

Detailed explanation

Step 1 - File size vs free RAM.

Look at the GGUF file size on Hugging Face. Add ~2 GB (KV cache + Windows overhead). That’s your RAM need for a comfortable run.

  • 3 GB file → needs ~5 GB free RAM
  • 5 GB file → needs ~7 GB free RAM
  • 9 GB file → needs ~11 GB free RAM
  • 20 GB file → needs ~22 GB free RAM

If your free RAM (not total - free right now) is less than this number, expect trouble.

Step 2 - Check if it’s MoE.

MoE models have “MoE”, “A3B”, “Mixture”, or an expert-count pattern in their name. Examples: Qwen3-30B-A3B (30B total, ~2B active), Mixtral-8x7B (8 experts of 7B each).

MoE takes RAM by full file size but runs at active-parameter speed. A 30B MoE on tight RAM might not fit, but if it does, it’ll be as fast as a 3B - much better than dense 30B.

Step 3 - Check the trained context.

On the Hugging Face model page, look for context_length or max_position_embeddings in the config. This is how much text the model can handle at once. Older models: 4K. Modern: 32K-128K.

If you plan to work with long documents, prefer high-context models. For short chat, 4K is fine.

Step 4 - Add it and see.

Drop the GGUF onto the Models screen (or use Add Model → Choose file…) in Abliteration. The fit-check dialog runs automatically:

  • Silent (no dialog) - comfortable fit, you’re good.
  • “Tight fit” - should work but close other apps for headroom (leaves ≤2 GB headroom).
  • “This model fits your PC, but you need to free up RAM” - you have enough total RAM but not enough right now; close apps first, then try.
  • “This model is bigger than your RAM” - try a lighter quant (Q3 or Q2 instead of Q4) or a smaller model.

You can always Add anyway to try - the warning is advisory.

Why it matters

Many local model clients will let you try to load anything without warning you first. Abliteration does the math upfront so you know before you sit through a 5-minute load that ends in failure.

In Abliteration specifically

The Hardware card’s Line 3 gives you baseline recommendations for your rig without needing to check anything per-model. Combine that with the fit-check dialog and you rarely need to think about RAM at all.

If you’re comparing models on Hugging Face before downloading, sort by file size - smaller quants of larger models often beat larger quants of smaller models at the same file size. A Qwen 2.5 14B Q3 (~7 GB file) may be smarter than a Qwen 2.5 7B Q8 (~7 GB file) despite similar RAM footprint.

Catalog is the map. Apps are the tools.

Run models on your own machine, not in the cloud.

Every model page has an "Open in Abliteration" button that hands the model directly to the first-party desktop client, at the quantization your rig can actually run. No API keys, no subscription, no prompt leakage.
